Dec 16 1893: Jonas Knight purchases property
1894: Cottage built for Jonas M. Knight.
Sold to Ed Schneider (Sr.)
Sold to John and Edith Hagen
Passed on to Chris Hagen
9/3/01: Chris Hagen says, "we had some information, (date on a door, anecdotal data) that our cottage was built c. 1892."
4/20/02: Chris Hagen says, "I knew Elsie, the daughter of Ed Schneider.
Karl (Van Dyke) Sr. called my parents when he heard that Ed was interested in selling. I was supposed to be asleep, but was listening (with the lights out) to the Washington Senators ball game on my crystal radio set; so I only heard half of the conversation. It went: 'John, its Karl Van Dyke!',,, mumble, mumble,,, 'Edith, Karl says the Schneider cottage is for sale, are you interested...' (at this point my heart is doing flip flops, I am screaming inaudibly YES YES... mom crushes me with, 'I don't know, which one is it?' He tries to describe it... fails.... then inspiration hits and he says, 'you know, we went to the cocktail party there' she says, 'oh, the one with the beautiful sunset?' he says 'yes.' she equivocates with 'I guess that would be O.K.' the rest of the conversation was inaudible.... no mention was made of this to either my mature older brother, or to me... nothing for months on end. I was miserable....
Then one day, out of the blue, Mom announced that this year we would be spending our summer in a different cottage on the island....BLISS.
The cottage came with furniture, dishes, etc. There was an accurate itemized list of each and everything in the cottage, 12 dinner forks, 9 salad forks, etc...
The rest is history ..."
